Women who Gather : Women of Zwakala

Women who Gather : Women of Zwakala

At Zwakala, we believe that beer is more than just a drink, it’s a reason to gather, laugh, and connect. But a cold brew on its own isn't enough to build a community. It takes passionate people to create the spaces and stories that bring us all together.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on three incredible local women who are doing just that.  And, naturally, they all share a deep love for a cold Zwakala.

1. Denise Tooley

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of attending an event at Minas Farm Venue, you’ll know Denise Tooley’s touch immediately. What began as her father’s old potato shed has, over the past few years, been transformed into a beautiful wedding venue, with Denise pouring her heart, creativity and energy into every corner of it. And, of course, no celebration is quite complete without one of her other great loves, an ice-cold Zwakala beer.

2. Amanda Schonken van Kraayenburg

Starting something new takes grit, vision, and a lot of heart. Amanda Schonken van Kraayenburg brought all three to Polokwane with the launch of the Early Bird Market.

Amanda recognized a need for local artisans, farmers, and families to meet, shop, and share stories in a vibrant morning setting. Through her market, she has breathed fresh energy into Polokwane’s social scene, giving local vendors a platform to shine and locals a new favorite weekend ritual. Amanda loves the way Zwakala sparks conversation. You’ll often spot her enjoying a refreshing Zwakala brew at the market, using it as an easy icebreaker while chatting with new market-goers and stallholders.

Next Early Bird Market: 6th September; Baxters Barn Venue Polokwane. Family Friendly

3. Lisa Martus: The Voice Behind the Magic

For years, Lisa Martus has been a cornerstone of the local tourism industry. If you’ve read a glowing article about a local hidden gem, a cozy guesthouse, or an incredible local craft business, chances are Lisa wrote it through her company Love Limpopo. She has spent her career putting others on the map, driven by an authentic love for people and an undeniable talent for storytelling.

The ironic part? She’s always shining the light on everyone else, almost never taking center stage herself. That’s why we’re so thrilled to celebrate her today.

Lisa views Zwakala through the eyes of a storyteller. She doesn't just drink the beer; she savors the history, the local ingredients, and the passion of the brewers behind it.

The women of Limpopo

Amongst many other women in this beautiful province, Denise, Amanda, and Lisa each bring people together in vastly different ways - through celebrations, lively community markets, and heartfelt stories. Yet, they all share the same grounded, hospitable spirit that defines our community (and our brewery!).

Next time you pop open a cold Zwakala, raise your glass to the people who build the places and tell the stories that make our community feel like home.

Cheers to all the beautiful women who bring us together!
